Jasper is the wilder, quieter sibling of Banff, the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies and one of the most remote and unspoiled. Where Banff has the famous turquoise lakes and the resort polish, Jasper has Maligne Lake and Spirit Island, the vast Columbia Icefield, the deepest dark-sky preserve in the country, and a sense of genuine wilderness. For couples who want the Rockies with more solitude and a rawer character, Jasper is the answer.
Maligne Lake and Spirit Island
Maligne Lake is the largest glacially fed lake in the Rockies, and Spirit Island, a tiny tree-covered islet near its southern end, is one of the most photographed locations in Canada. The classic view, reached by boat, frames the island against a wall of snow-capped peaks reflected in the still water. It is a remote, breathtaking setting that rewards the effort to reach it.
Pyramid Lake and Pyramid Island
Pyramid Lake, just minutes from the Jasper townsite, is the accessible counterpoint to remote Maligne. A small wooden footbridge leads to Pyramid Island, a tiny forested islet that has long been a favourite for intimate ceremonies, with Pyramid Mountain rising behind and the lake reflecting it all. It is easy to reach, quietly beautiful, and one of the most reliable elopement settings in the park.
The Columbia Icefield
The Columbia Icefield, on the boundary of Jasper and Banff along the Icefields Parkway, is the largest icefield in the Rockies, and the Athabasca Glacier flowing from it is one of the few glaciers in the world a couple can stand upon. For an elopement of genuine drama, the icefield offers a landscape of blue ice and rock unlike anything else in the country, raw, vast, and primordial.
Athabasca Falls and the Wilderness
Jasper’s wilder character shows in its waterfalls and forests. Athabasca Falls, a powerful cascade carving through a limestone gorge, offers dramatic motion and sound. The park’s vast forests, the Maligne Canyon, and the open valleys give couples a sense of being genuinely in the wilderness rather than at a managed viewpoint. Jasper is also the world’s second-largest dark-sky preserve, making a nighttime, star-filled portrait a rare possibility.
