The Best Season for a Santa Marta & Tayrona Elopement

The dry season, the wet season, and the all-important Tayrona park closures. Here is what each delivers and the ideal window, with the closure dates to watch.

The Santa Marta coast is hot and tropical year-round, but the rain, the sea conditions, and crucially the opening of Tayrona National Park shift through the year in ways that matter enormously for an elopement. Choosing the right window, and checking the park’s annual closures, is the single most important seasonal decision here. Here is what each season delivers.

Dry Season: December to March

The main dry season, December through March, is the prime window: warm, sunny, and stable, with the clearest skies, calmest seas, and most reliable conditions for both the beaches and the mountains. This coincides with the North American winter, drawing couples escaping the cold, and the dependable weather makes the turquoise coves and golden light at their most spectacular. It is peak season, so the most popular and the busiest, especially around the holidays.

The Tayrona Park Closures

A factor unique to this destination: Tayrona National Park closes completely for several weeks each year to allow the ecosystem and the indigenous communities’ sacred sites to recover, with closures historically falling around late January or February, June, and late October into early November, though the exact dates change yearly. Any elopement that includes the park must be planned around these closures, so confirming the current year’s dates before booking is essential.

Wet Season: September to November

The wettest months, September through November, bring heavier rain, higher humidity, and rougher seas, along with the lushest, greenest jungle and the fewest crowds. The rain is often in short, dramatic bursts rather than all day, and the Sierra Nevada is at its most vivid and misty. For couples comfortable with the heat and a flexible plan, the green season offers lower prices and dramatic, atmospheric scenery, with the park closure window to watch in October and November.

The Best Window

For most couples, the clear choice is the dry season, with the sweet spots of December and March balancing excellent weather against the holiday-peak crowds of January, while avoiding the park’s closure windows. The short drier spell around July can also be good. Whatever the timing, confirm Tayrona’s opening dates first, then build the elopement around the dependable dry-season light and the calm, clear Caribbean.
