How to Plan a Victoria Elopement

The BC licence, the Butchart and city-park permit picture, an island commissioner, and building the day around gardens, coast, and mild light. The full sequence.

Couples plan Victoria around the gardens and assume the rest falls into place.

The Butchart package and the ferry timing have their own order that rewards getting right.

Victoria is the gentlest elopement in Canada to plan, as long as the sequence runs in the right direction.

The legal part is easy

A BC licence is $100 from any island issuer, valid three months, no waiting period, no residency rule. An officiant and two witnesses complete it, and visitors marry on foreign ID.

An island commissioner who knows Butchart's rules and the best coastal vantages is the standard choice, and the experienced ones book early.

The day: gardens, coast, and mild light

A Victoria day moves between the refined and the wild: gardens or the Inner Harbour, then the Dallas Road coast for the ocean and the Olympic Mountains. The mild climate keeps it green year-round, so the gardens rarely limit the date.

The sequence I run

Confirm the day first, then the officiant, then lodging, then the ferry or flight, then details. Reverse it and the Butchart availability and travel start dictating everything else.

My part: I plan the sequence, book the vendors, arrange the Butchart package or the city-park permit, and both photograph and film the day. Twelve years and 240+ couples in, the couples who ran it in order found Victoria the most effortless of all.
