Tofino is the wild coast
Tofino sits on the exposed west coast of the island, wrapped in the Pacific Rim rainforest. Long Beach and Chesterman Beach run for kilometres, storm-watching in the shoulder seasons is spectacular, and the light through the mist and the sea stacks is unlike anywhere else in Canada. You can have a ceremony on sand with no one in the frame in either direction, which is nearly impossible in the city.
The honest tradeoff
Tofino is remote, roughly a ferry and a long, winding drive from Vancouver, and its best lodges are not cheap in summer. The weather is moodier and wetter than the mainland, though that moodiness is exactly what makes the photographs. If you want easy logistics and a four-season city day, stay in Vancouver. If you want the wildest coast in the country and true solitude, Tofino is worth the journey.
