What to Wear for a Sayulita Elopement

Pacific heat, sea breeze, surf sand, and a festival of colour. What photographs well in a bohemian surf town, with the tropical conditions built in.

You plan a formal look for the beach.

Sayulita is barefoot, boho, and full of colour, and it asks for something looser.

Dress for the heat and the sea breeze, and lean into the town's colour rather than against it.

Fabric and the heat

The Pacific surf coast runs hot and humid, so lightweight, breathable, flowing fabrics suit the temperature and the boho setting. Chiffon and soft, relaxed silhouettes catch the sea breeze and move against the surf, and the movement is the signature frame. Bare feet suit the sand.

Colour against the town

Against the golden beach, ivory reads cleanly and a warm tone lifts the palette. Against the papel picado and painted walls of the streets, white holds and a touch of colour or a boho detail belongs, where a stiff formal look would fight the setting.

Test the outfit in the heat first, and let me build the day around the west-facing sunset. Because I film as well as shoot, fabric that moves in the breeze earns its place twice. Twelve years and 240+ couples in, the couples who dressed for the town's easy colour moved through the day with ease.
