Kelsey got ready at a lodge with the lake filling the window, in a eucalyptus and daisy crown and a turquoise bead necklace the same colour as the water. Her father saw her first and covered his mouth. Then a short walk in between the people who had flown out for it, vows with the peaks behind them, and a petal toss that went everywhere at once. The rest of the day belonged to the veil and the wind: two friends holding it out sideways, the sun coming straight through it, and at the end a ridge high enough that the lake was only a stripe of colour a long way below.
