Whistler is a world-class resort with world-class prices and world-class crowds. A few hours east, Revelstoke gives you bigger, wilder mountains and your pick of them, for noticeably less. The honest case for the switch.
Whistler is one of the best resorts on earth, and it charges accordingly. I love shooting there. But when a couple tells me the budget is tight or the whole place feels a little too polished and too busy for the day they actually want, I point them east.
Six and a half hours from Vancouver, or two and a half from Kelowna, is Revelstoke: bigger vertical, wilder terrain, real backcountry, and almost no one on it. It is the mountain town Whistler used to be. Here is the honest comparison.

Revelstoke is the mountain town Whistler used to be
Revelstoke has the biggest lift-served vertical in North America and a genuine adventure identity built on cat-skiing, backcountry, and the Meadows in the Sky. You get a gondola, a skywalk and alpine trails on a $55 Explore Pass, a mountain coaster, paddling on the Columbia, a snowcat or a 4x4 to a remote ridge, and a helicopter that starts a fraction of Whistler's. It is less glossy and it has more soul, and you will not be sharing your ceremony spot with a tour group.
The math
My fully curated Revelstoke day is $6,800 for the four-to-five-hour Essential and $9,000 for the full eight-hour Story, and everything is bundled in: planning, permits, styling, the activities, the photography, and the film. In Whistler, a comparable day is assembled à la carte from premiums that add up fast, on top of lodging that costs more per night. You are not cutting corners in Revelstoke. You are cutting the resort markup.
You get the mountain to yourselves
This is the part that matters most for the photographs. Whistler's best-known viewpoints are busy, and a busy backdrop changes how a day feels and how it shoots. In Revelstoke we routinely have a ridge, a meadow, or a lakeshore entirely to ourselves. That means clean frames, freedom to move, and a calmer, more private day, which is the whole reason most people elope in the first place.
The honest tradeoffs
Revelstoke is farther from Vancouver, a road trip rather than a quick transfer, and the town is smaller with fewer luxury-hotel options. If you want ski-in valet and a Michelin-adjacent dinner scene, Whistler wins. But if you want the biggest mountains in the room, real quiet, and a day that costs less and feels more like yours, Revelstoke is the better call more often than couples expect.
