I have photographed in Quebec City enough times to have a clear hierarchy of locations. Some spots look extraordinary in photographs but are impossible to work in during peak season. Others look modest in reference images but produce consistently excellent results in real sessions. This is the list I actually use, with the specific reasons each one works.
The Fortification Walls and Gates
The walls that ring Old Quebec are the only surviving fortification walls in North America north of Mexico, and the gates that punctuate them, Porte Saint-Louis, Porte Saint-Jean, Porte Kent, are some of the most photographable stone structures in Canada. I use the inside face of the walls at Governors Garden for the combination of the wall height, the lawn, and the rear facade of the Chateau Frontenac visible above the parapet. Porte Saint-Louis with the round towers and the cobblestone approach gives a European character that requires no styling work at all to achieve.
Plains of Abraham
The Plains of Abraham is a large park on the cliff above the St. Lawrence, just west of the fortification walls. I use it specifically in autumn, when the maple and elm canopy turns and the light through the golden leaves in October and November is unlike anything in the city. In summer the Plains is an open expanse with less visual structure, but the Martello towers at the western end and the cliff edge with the river view give usable locations year-round. I have shot sunrise sessions on the Plains in November with snow on the grass and the river below, and those images hold up as well as any city elopement work I have produced.
Ile d’Orleans
Ile d’Orleans is a large island in the St. Lawrence fifteen minutes by bridge from the Old Quebec perimeter. The island has farmland, vineyards, orchards, and a shoreline that gives the Quebec City skyline and the Chateau Frontenac in the distance. I use Ile d’Orleans as a secondary or main location for couples who want a pastoral setting near the city. The vineyards on the southern shore give a composed background without driving three hours to wine country, and in spring the apple orchards in bloom and in autumn the harvest both produce conditions that the city itself cannot match.
