Banff
A complete companion to marrying in the Canadian Rockies: every venue tier, every permit, every figure, in one place.

Banff is Canada's destination wedding capital for one reason: nowhere else in the country puts a mountain landscape this extraordinary within a two-hour drive of a major airport. The Fairmont Banff Springs against the Rockies. Lake Louise turquoise in the morning before anyone else arrives. October larch gold against the first snow. These are not metaphors. They are the literal conditions available to couples who choose this place.
I have photographed weddings in Banff across every season: summer lake golden hours, October backcountry larch sessions, November snow at the Fairmont, January winter wonderland in a setting most photographers never attempt. Parks Canada permits, mountain logistics, and alpine contingency planning are part of how I work here. This is the ground I know.
The Directory
Everything I have filed about marrying in Banff and the Canadian Rockies, organized by what you are trying to figure out. Start with the complete guide, then come back for the specific pieces as your planning develops.
Real Weddings
Four weddings from my Banff archive, written the way I remember them: the light, the location, what the mountains gave us that day. Open any card to read the full story.
The Ledger
Banff wedding budgets are routinely underestimated because the venue costs are high, the catering minimums at the Fairmont are substantial, and the permit fees are a separate line item most planners quote later. This builds from the ground up so your number is honest before you make any commitments.

The Timeline
The Fairmont Banff Springs fills more than a year out for summer Saturdays. The Parks Canada permit process takes months. This is the timeline I walk every Banff couple through, starting with the two decisions that determine everything else.
Venue, date, and photographer
The Fairmont Banff Springs fills more than a year out for summer Saturdays. The photographer fills on the same timeline. These three decisions determine everything else. Lock them first.
Parks Canada permits
Wedding ceremonies in Banff National Park require a Special Event Permit from Parks Canada. For high-demand locations like Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, start this process at least 12 months out. Your planner handles the filing but you need to initiate the conversation.
Planner, caterer, and officiant
Banff's best planners and caterers fill at the same pace as the venues. The officiant is simpler but worth confirming early so you have the person you want.
Alberta marriage licence
Alberta marriage licences are available from any registry agent. They cost approximately $75 and are valid for 3 months. There is no waiting period. Obtain yours no earlier than 3 months before the ceremony.
Portrait location and timing
I walk every Banff portrait location with the couple before the wedding day. In the Rockies this specifically means checking mountain visibility, permit access, and the exact position of the sun at your portrait hour.
Be present, let the mountains do what they do
Your only job is to be in it. I bring the Rockies home with you.
The Company I Keep
The planners, florists, musicians, and caterers I work alongside in Banff. Every name here has been vouched for directly. Ask and I will make warm introductions to anyone on this list.
Ask and I will make warm introductions to the planners, florists, and caterers I trust in the Rockies.
Questions
The questions I hear most often from couples planning a Banff wedding, answered plainly. If yours is not here, it will be in my first reply when you reach out.
From the Journal
Longer reads for couples who want to go deeper: permit guides, venue breakdowns, why October is underrated, and what golden hour actually looks like at Lake Louise. Read one and the next one is usually obvious.
