Ecuador sits on the equator, which means the seasonal variation is less extreme than you might expect. The cloud forest around Mindo has a drier season from approximately June through September and a wetter season from October through May. The photography in both seasons is good but the character is different, and I typically recommend the dryer season for the majority of couples, with a specific exception I will explain.
June to September: Drier Windows
The June to September window is the one I recommend most often for first-time Ecuador couples. The mornings are more likely to have periods when the cloud thins and stronger light filters through, giving occasional shafts of light through the canopy that add drama to the otherwise diffused quality. The trails are drier, which matters for logistics if not for photography. Mindo is within reach of the Galapagos window in this season, so couples who want to combine the cloud forest with a Galapagos trip can do both within a single Ecuador visit. I have run that combined itinerary twice and it is one of the most comprehensive South America elopement experiences I offer.
Wet Season: The Full Cloud Experience
The wet season from October through May gives the cloud forest in its most fully realized state. The mist is constant and thick, the vegetation is at peak green, and the orchids and bromeliads on the trail are at their most abundant. The light is softer and more consistent, with less variation through the day. For couples who specifically want the mysterious misty forest aesthetic rather than the filtered light look, the wet season delivers it more reliably. I do a wet season cloud forest elopement each year and the images consistently surprise couples who were uncertain about the rain. The cloud forest wet season is not the same experience as being rained on at an outdoor venue in Vancouver.
