I photograph wine country elopements specifically because the vineyard setting tells a story without any help from me. The vine rows, the harvest season, the morning light on the frost-covered fields in October, all of it communicates something about slowness and pleasure and the particular character of a place that you cannot manufacture. In PEC the wine country character is genuine and the scale of the landscape, not too large, not too small, is exactly right for elopement photography.
The Vine Rows and Field Edges
The vine row compositions I use most consistently are the walking-toward-camera shot with the rows converging behind the couple, and the wide-field composition from the property edge with the vine blocks creating horizontal texture across the middle ground. In autumn harvest season the leaf colour adds warmth that summer does not have, and the condensation on the grape clusters in the morning catches the early light in a way that I photograph as close-up detail work alongside the couple portraits. PEC vine rows are younger than the Niagara Peninsula vines and lower to the ground, which means the couple is visible above the canopy rather than dwarfed by it, and the sky is always present in the wide compositions.
The Winery Buildings
The winery buildings in PEC range from converted heritage barns to contemporary timber-frame structures, and both give usable photography settings. The heritage barns give warm wood tones and the agricultural pastoral character that the county is known for. The contemporary structures give clean lines and modern materials that let the landscape remain the primary visual element. I use the winery building exteriors as contextual backgrounds rather than as primary locations, positioning the couple on the path or in the field with the building giving character to the middle ground. The barrel rooms at a few PEC estates are also exceptional for intimate indoor portraits on overcast days.
Orchards and Cider Country
PEC has apple orchards that work equally well as the vineyards for elopement photography, and in May when the apple blossom is at its peak the orchards rival any wine country setting I have photographed. The blossom season runs for approximately two weeks in late April and early May and the light through the flower canopy is soft and warm in a way that the summer vine leaves cannot replicate. I have photographed several PEC elopements specifically in the orchard blossom season and the images are among my favourite from any Ontario session. The Waupoos Estates Winery and several of the apple farm operations along the south shore have orchard access and tasting rooms that work for the same session structure as the wine estates.
