Kelowna sits in the Okanagan Valley between two mountain ranges and the 135-kilometre Okanagan Lake, and the combination produces a visual environment unlike anywhere else in British Columbia. The surrounding wine country — over 200 wineries within a 30-minute drive of the city — offers estate venues with vine rows, stone cellars, and lake-view terraces that photograph in a register closer to Tuscany than to what most people picture when they think of Canadian destination weddings. The light in the Okanagan is different from the coast: drier, clearer, and in the late afternoon genuinely golden in a way that the cloud-influenced light of Vancouver rarely achieves. I photograph in Kelowna for couples who want British Columbia's beauty with something closer to Mediterranean visual character.

The light

The Okanagan's continental climate means more reliable sunshine than coastal BC, and the valley's orientation channels the late afternoon sun along the lake in a way that creates beautiful, directional light across the vine rows and water surface. Vineyard portrait sessions in September, when the harvest begins and the vines are turning, are some of the most visually lush images I make anywhere in Canada.
