Why elope in Puglia
“Whitewashed hilltops, trulli stone roofs, Adriatic cliffs — and still half the crowd that Tuscany gets.”
Puglia is the part of Italy that serious wedding photographers have been recommending quietly for a decade, and it is now deservedly gaining the international attention it merits. The Valle d'Itria's trulli — the round-roofed stone buildings unique to this region — create a visual vocabulary unlike anything in the rest of Europe. Ostuni's white hilltop city looks like Greece transplanted to the Italian heel. Polignano a Mare's wedding venues cling to limestone cliffs above the Adriatic with a drama that rivals the Amalfi Coast at half the price. The masserie — converted fortified farms — offer wedding venues of extraordinary architectural character surrounded by ancient olive groves. I love shooting in Puglia because it still feels genuinely discovered rather than saturated.
The light
Puglia's whitewashed surfaces — particularly in Ostuni and Locorotondo — act as massive light reflectors that bounce the Mediterranean sun in every direction simultaneously. The result is a naturally lit portrait environment that fills shadows without losing direction, and the warm stone of the masserie adds a textural richness that gives every image genuine depth.
