Why elope in Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya is the most-booked destination wedding stretch in the Americas, and for good reason: the logistics are almost frictionless for North American guests, the resort infrastructure is world-class, and the natural settings — particularly the cenotes — are genuinely extraordinary. I photograph across the Riviera Maya regularly, and my consistent advice to couples is to move away from the resort beach for portraits: the jungle and cenote environments provide filtered, cathedral-like light that the open beach simply cannot offer. A cenote ceremony, with light pouring down through the opening in the limestone, is one of the most visually spectacular things I have photographed anywhere.

The light

The jungle canopy along the Riviera Maya creates a natural soft box — diffused, even light that flatters subjects uniformly without harsh shadows. The cenotes add blue-green water reflections that bounce light upward onto faces in a way that is extraordinarily flattering and requires no additional equipment to achieve.
