Why elope in Sicily
“Greek temples, Baroque lemon-stone towns, and Mediterranean light that is absolutely unfiltered.”
Sicily is Italy's most ancient and visually layered island — Greek temples at Agrigento, Baroque Noto built entirely from golden limestone, Taormina's Greek theatre looking across the Strait of Messina toward Calabria with Etna rising behind it. The island's position in the central Mediterranean gives it light of a quality that is genuinely different from mainland Italy: brighter, harder, more saturated, with a clarity that comes from the sea on three sides. I photograph in Sicily specifically because the combination of ancient archaeological context and Mediterranean light creates images that feel genuinely historic. Noto in particular — where the entire Baroque town was rebuilt from a single pale golden stone after a 1693 earthquake — photographs as if it was designed for exactly this purpose.
The light
Noto's golden limestone warms as the afternoon progresses, eventually radiating its stored heat and light in a way that makes the whole city glow amber for the hour around sunset. The archaeological sites — the Valley of the Temples, the Greek theatre at Taormina — add a scale and historical weight to portrait backgrounds that no other Italian region offers.
