Bahia Solano is one of the most remote places in Colombia that is still reachable by commercial flight. There is no road in. The jungle comes down to the black sand beach and the Pacific stretches away to nothing. From July through October, humpback whales enter the bay to calve and breed, and a couple who times their elopement around this window gets something no other destination in the world offers: vows on a rainforest beach with breaching whales visible from where they are standing.
Why Whale Season Changes the Entire Elopement
I first photographed a couple in Bahia Solano during whale season in 2023, and the experience redefined what I think is possible in destination elopement photography. The whales surface within a few hundred meters of the shore. During peak migration, July through September, it is common to see three or four animals in a single hour of morning light. Humpbacks breach and spy-hop, making them highly visible from the beach. The ceremony itself happens on the sand, with the jungle as a wall behind the couple and the whale activity happening in the bay in front of them. Photographs from these sessions have a before-and-after quality in my portfolio.
The Colombian Pacific Setting
The Pacific coast of Colombia is not the Caribbean. It is wetter, wilder, and less developed. The rainforest here is primary growth, some of the most biodiverse on earth. The beaches are black volcanic sand fringed by coconut palms and jungle. There is almost no tourism infrastructure outside of the few lodges that cater to whale watching visitors and surfers. The complete absence of other tourists is something couples notice immediately. A session on these beaches feels private in a way that Cartagena or the Caribbean cannot match.
Planning Around Whale Behavior
Whale activity peaks in the early morning, typically from 6:00 to 10:00 AM, before the wind picks up. I structure whale season elopement days to take advantage of this: a sunrise ceremony on the beach, portraits in the morning light while whale activity is highest, then a forest session later in the day as the beach light gets harsh. The local whale-watching operators know the bay well and can advise on where activity has been concentrated in the days before the ceremony. I build a relationship with the local team before every trip here.
Getting There and What to Prepare
Bahia Solano is reached by a 45-minute propeller flight from Medellin or a similar flight from Bogota. The flights are small, the runway is short, and weather cancellations are part of the experience. I always advise couples to build a buffer day on each end of the trip, not as a worst-case measure but as a near-certainty. Accommodation ranges from basic eco-lodges to one or two more comfortable boutique options. The food is spectacular, fresh Pacific seafood cooked simply. This is not a luxury destination in the resort sense. It is something better: genuine, wild, and completely unlike anywhere else in Colombia.
