The larch trees in the alpine areas above Banff National Park are deciduous conifers that turn from green to bright gold for approximately ten days in late September and early October before dropping their needles. This is the most photographically extraordinary window for wedding and elopement photography in the Canadian Rockies, and it books earlier than any other period in the year.
Where the Larches Are
The primary larch concentrations accessible to wedding photographers are Larch Valley above Moraine Lake, the slopes above Lake Louise toward the Plain of Six Glaciers, and Paradise Valley. Larch Valley is the most dramatic and most accessible concentration: the trail from Moraine Lake rises through the treeline into a high alpine meadow where larches turn gold in a way that has no equivalent visual elsewhere in Canada. The combination of golden larches, turquoise lake water visible below, and snow-dusted mountain peaks above is specific to this ten-day window.
When It Happens
The larch colour change typically peaks in the third week of September at the higher elevations, with the lower elevation larches (around Lake Louise itself) peaking slightly later, often in early October. The exact timing varies by year depending on temperature and precipitation. Most years, the peak is between September 18 and October 5. The window from colour change start to needle drop is roughly ten to fourteen days.
Booking Requirements
The larch season is the most competitive booking window in Banff for photographers, officiants, and Parks Canada ceremony permits. The Parks Canada ceremony permit for Moraine Lake during larch season should be applied for by March or April. Photographer availability for late September dates in Banff typically closes by May. This is not an exaggeration. If you are planning a larch season wedding, treat the permit and photography booking as the first tasks in the planning process, not the last.
What to Wear
The larch season visual is dominated by gold, green, blue, and white. Earth tones complement this palette well. Burgundy, deep navy, forest green, and cream all photograph strongly in the larch environment. Avoid colours that compete with the gold of the trees. The temperature at altitude during larch season is genuinely cold, typically five to ten degrees Celsius at the lake level and colder above the treeline. A warm layer is practical and a heavy coat worn between frames is standard.
